Mixing Exercise with Asthma

When 52-year old Henry Brown revisits the Ford Ironman 70.3 California Triathlon in Oceanside this March, he'll count on two things to endure the 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride and a 13.1-mile run: Months of vigorous training and albuterol.
Brown, who has chronic asthma and exercise-induced asthma, recalled last year's frosty swim start that caused him to hyperventilate and seek rescue from a patrolling kayak. He persevered nevertheless. After catching his breath, Brown continued swimming and didn't stop until he crossed the finish line. In March, he'll do it again.

I started personal training with Joni after I realized that I was at risk for Cardiovascular Disease and wanted to improve my overall health so that I could live long enough to see my grandchildren and as a smaller goal I also really wanted to be able to pull myself into my husband's fishing boat without having any assistance. When I first started training I was so easily winded doing the Stairmaster at the lowest level that I could only do it for 2-3 minutes without wanting to stop, I couldn't do a single pushup or sit-up. Now I work out 5 days a week with Joni and even though the Stair Master is still challenging I can stay on it for 30 minutes at level 5 and still talk my way through it, I can do over 24 sit-ups and can pull myself up into the boat with my new upper body strength. I have lost over 35 lbs and 4 dress sizes but the greatest achievement is the way I feel about being able to accomplish something that I felt at one time was impossible. My trainer is not only highly motivating she is loving and considerate of other's limitations. Thanks for believing in me Joni!
